The Lea is an independent pre-primary school, established in 1972. We aim to teach children to value themselves as individuals, while learning to show respect and consideration to others; to develop a sense of fun and a sense of responsibility; and to become flexible and adaptable people in a competitive world.

There are two groups at the Lea, with a maximum of 24 children in each group. We have a balanced daily programme that includes plenty of free play as well as creative art activities, music, literacy, life skills and numeracy, with an emphasis on primary school readiness. A specialist teacher gives weekly movement to music classes, which is vital for the development of good gross motor co-ordination and strength.

After the first year in the junior (Ladybird) group, we assess each child for his or her readiness to move on to the senior (Teddy) group. The assessment is based on physical development including perceptual and motor skills, as well as emotional and social maturity which are such a vital aspect of school readiness.

All our children receive annual vision and hearing screening tests, and are referred for professional therapy if necessary.

Lea Pre-primary is centrally situated near Rondebosch Common and serves most of Cape Town's southern suburbs from Woodstock to Kenilworth, although most of our children live in Rondebosch, Rosebank, Claremont, Mowbray and Pinelands. We feed all the schools in the surrounding area.

School hours are 08h30 to 12h30, although the school is open from 07h45 for the convenience of working parents. Aftercare is available until 17h30 during school terms, which correspond with the government calendar.

The school owns its own property and is managed and maintained by a parent-run Executive Committee, which employs the teachers, an administrator, two teacher assistants and an aftercare supervisor.
